WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES

IMF workshop

Peter Debreczeni¬ founder of Interspace Magic Factory

13 -¬16th May

From 15.00 to 18.00

@ Gizli Bahce

Interspace Magic Factory experiments investigate the boundaries of digital and physical space using the tools of video projection.

During this workshop the participants can learn about simple low¬ cost digital manufacturing methods and the principles of installation design and building. They can participate in the preparation of a large¬ scale installation which will be exhibited at the VJ Torna Festival.

Program - Day 1

3 hours in two part with a 15 min break

Lecture:

Powerpoint or jpg presentation. Participants will get a printed out summary of the workshop.

No tools or computer required from the participants.

For the presentation we need a projector.

Introduction of the lecturer.

Introduction of the topics:

Contemporary trends in scenery design and video mapping.

(Installation mapping, projected environments, spatial augmented reality) from an underground invention to a new medium (projections from an EDM party to concert hall) we live in a real life movie, and we need of our "daily SFX" (the impact of the movies on our life)

the ability to change our environment (the world is a large touchscreen)

The installation art. The invisible boundaries between art architecture and media.

sculptures with painted face ¬ the projected reality¬ the enhance of creative mediums tool of interaction

Installations in architecture. A contemporary movement.

architecture as a visual impact small scale

public buildings digital or analogue parametrics¬

generative design vs fuctional needs

media and architecture (statics vs dymanics)

¬Designing structures for projection (Gehry concert hall)

¬new ways in interior design

¬new ways in installation design

Installations in scenery

¬3d displays and real life

illusion of change with simple tools

¬impossible sets

¬projected sets

¬pre digital special effects in new roles ¬ exploring matte painting, and the forgotten fields of SFX

What is Interspace Magic Factory?

¬started as set making workshop for VJ Torna encourage people to experiment with mapping

to introduce step by step new ways in set design to connect media/architecture/art

Program - Day 2

3 hours in two part with a 15 min break

Lecture and practice

The first part is a Powerpoint or jpg presentation, the second part is practice. Participants will get a printed out summary of the workshop.

The participants should have cutting tools (standard duty olfa cutter, medium ¬size scissor) glue for paper, and a printed out layout for the workshop installation). Computer not necessary. For the presentation we need a projector.

Introduction of the workshop:

What will we do here?

The rules of installation construction.

Designing installations: useful forms, ways to experiment, rules of projecting and settings

Tools to make installations: basics softwares, simple workflows in digital design.

Basics of modelling softwares (Rhino, Skectup, 3DS Max)

Preparing our installation for animations.

Steps of fabrication.

The role of mock¬ups.

Preparation of the final construction.

Fabrication methods.

¬ways to choose materials: paper/wood/metal/other

¬ways to prepare the construction:

a. by hand

b. by simple houshold items (printer or projector)

c. by plotters or computer driven automated tools (CNC¬etc)

¬ways to assembly

¬ways to transport

¬ways to set up¬and fix your piece

The afterlife of the piece.

Practice (optional)

Prepare the triangle piece for the object mapping workshop.

Program - Day 3

Practice

On site construction of the VJ torna installation. Preparation of the parts. Methods to organise the construction (part labeling, construction steps)

The participants should have cutting tools (standard ¬medium duty olfa cutter, medium¬ size

scissor). Computer not necessary. We might use dangerous adhesives and cutting tools. Basic working safety instructions will be given, but participants must be cautious.

Program - Day 4

Practice

Assembly of the parts and ways to prepare it for the final on¬site construction.

The participants should have cutting tools (standard¬ medium duty olfa cutter, medium¬ size

scissor). We might use dangerous adhesives and cutting tools. Basic working safety instructions will be given, but participants must be cautious.
